What is Maundy Money?

Maundy Money is given out at a ceremony called Royal Maundy. This is a Church of England service which is held each year on Maundy Thursday. Maundy Thursday is the day before Good Friday.

At Royal Maundy, the Queen or a member of the Royal family if the Queen is unavailable,  gives out a set of small silver coins which is known as Maundy money which is given as symbolic charity (also known as alms) to elderly people who have been selected to receive it. Believe it or not, Maundy Money is legal tender - so you could go and spend it, but of course, nobody ever would because it is worth pennies as legal tender, and far more as rare silver coins! In addition to the maundy money  or silver coins, a small amount of regular money is also given out to recipients, again, symbolically in lieu of charitable payments for clothing etc.

Maundy is derived from the work "mandatum" which means an instruction and the instruction is that given by Jesus at the Last Supper who instructed that his followers should love one another.

In Middle Ages, English Kings and Queens also washed the feet of beggars in imitation of Jesus whose feet were washed by Mary, and the monarchs then presented gifts and money to the poor. Over time, as mentioned above, real money was substituted for the clothing and other items that had once been given out (as you can imagine how hard it would be to choose clothing to give to unknown members of the public in modern times!)

I'm sure that one of the reasons why maundy money is so popular amongst numismatists is because it has a personal connection with whoever the monarch was at the time because more likely than not, it would have been handed over by the actual King or Queen of the day. That's makes these coins historically very exciting. They are also very small and attractive, as well as scarce.

I would be very grateful if you could let me know whether there is a website to find out where a particular Maundy service was held. The year I am looking for is 1896. I am also looking for a list of recipients for that year, although I realise that may be more difficult. We have a set that has come through the family with no information. I’d be very grateful for any help. Thanks very much, David Bath.
