Some coins are collected all around the world and one of the most popular non-British coins is the silver dollar. Why is the silver dollar so popular? Well, I think there are a number of reasons. Firstly, the silver dollar has historic connections with the old American wild west - chances are that if you have watched more than a handful of westerns you will have encountered the legendary American coin in some scene or other. It's a world famous coin rather like the gold sovereign or krugerrand. Like those coins, it is of course, most famously minted from solid silver and any solid silver coins are not only very valuable, especially at the moment due to rises in the values of precious metals, but they are also big coins and so when made of solid silver, the silver dollar is a magnificent coin which oozes both history and importance.
Silver dollars were minted by both Canada and the United States. In the US, perhaps the most famous version is known as the Morgan dollar. The Morgan dollar was issued from 1878 until 1921. There were none made in the years 1905 to 1920. The most common Morgan dollar coins are the 1921 minted one. The Morgan Silver dollar gets its name from the designer of the coin, George T. Morgan. Many US and worldwide coin collectors seek out these particular coins and the many variations and mint marks are also carefully sought after. As with any rare coins, condition is everything. Morgan silver dollar coins also have a very special 'Top 100" rare examples which is a list that was put together by Leroy C. Van Allen and A. George Mallis who had undertaken a large amount of research into the production and minting of these Morgan dollars, carefully noting every tiny variation. The silver dollar coins in their list of 100 are known as VAM silver dollars.
The other thing that makes Morgan silver dollars so collectable is the fact that many examples are relatively inexpensive and so coin collectors can get very imposing and tactile silver coins for what is a relatively low price compared to other comparable coins.
